The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF), in partnership with several sponsors, officially launched the second edition of the Kipchumba Karori International Volleyball Tournament on Friday, underscoring its growing reputation as a platform for nurturing and showcasing emerging talent.
Speaking at the launch in a Nairobi hotel, Patron Kipchumba Karori emphasised that the tournament remains firmly rooted in its mission to develop volleyball from the grassroots and widen opportunities for young players across the country.
He noted that the initiative aims to not only expand the sport’s reach but also support promising students through scholarships.
“The launch of this second edition is to ensure a steady supply of talent and entrench volleyball in the country,” Karori said.
“We are doing all this to incentivize sports and make sure the infrastructure built for athletes is fully utilized. If we don’t have people to use these stadiums, they will go to waste,” he added.
To further motivate participation, Karori confirmed that the winning team will receive Sh 1 million, while the second and third-placed teams will take home Sh 500,000 and Sh 300,000 respectively.
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Vice president Paul Bitok echoed Karori’s sentiments, describing the tournament as a strong motivator for young athletes. He noted that scrapping the Sh 1,500 registration fee for primary school teams is expected to significantly boost participation.
“Giving primary schools free registration will change the identity of this tournament, with more than 50 schools expected to register,” said the former national team coach and veteran player.
KVF president Charles Nyaberi, also present at the launch, praised the tournament’s commitment to talent development.
He highlighted Eldoret as a region with fast-rising volleyball potential that sports agencies and federations should actively tap into. Nyaberi further thanked fans for the enthusiastic support shown during previous events, urging them to maintain the same spirit.
Set to run from December 19 to 21 at the Eldoret National Polytechnic, this year’s tournament will broaden its scholarship reach, with opportunities expected not only at the university level but also for secondary and primary school players.
Organisers say the expansion reflects the tournament’s long-term vision of creating sustainable pathways for young athletes.
With its continued emphasis on accessibility, exposure, and athlete development, the Kipchumba Karori Eldoret International Volleyball Tournament is steadily positioning itself as one of the country’s most impactful talent-building events.
