Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has launched a countywide sanitary pads distribution program aimed at reducing school absenteeism among girls during menstruation.

Through the County Department of Gender and Youth, 3,173 girls from 20 schools across the county have received sanitary towels. The distribution is being overseen by County Executive Committee members.

County data indicates that nearly three out of every ten girls miss school each month due to menstruation, a factor that continues to affect their academic performance.

In addition to distributing sanitary products, the program included mentorship sessions designed to promote confidence, resilience, and menstrual health awareness among schoolgirls.

Governor Waiguru said the initiative is part of the county government’s broader girl-child empowerment agenda, addressing the gap in access to sanitary products that has forced some girls to stay home during their menstrual cycle.

Speaking at Kinyaga Secondary School, Chief Officer for Gender and Youth Sheila Mwangi noted that the program aims to ensure no girl misses school due to her period. She added that some families prioritise basic household needs over sanitary products due to economic hardship.

“The initiative ensures girls can stay in school and focus on their learning without disruption,” Mwangi said.

School leaders welcomed the support. Kinyaga Secondary School Principal Naomi Kariuki said the donation would help students remain in class despite economic challenges.

“Many parents are struggling with the current economic situation. This support will help girls continue learning without interruption,” Kariuki said.

Similarly, Kutus Comprehensive Primary School headteacher Patrick Njue described the donation as a timely intervention supporting both health and welfare in school.

The county government emphasised that while the current program focuses on girls, complementary initiatives targeting boys are also planned to ensure inclusive development.

Governor Waiguru added that supporting vulnerable groups is both a constitutional and moral obligation. The county has allocated Ksh.30 million in the current financial year to support young people, women, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable families.
