Residents of Kariti Ward and surrounding areas in Ndia, Kirinyaga County, are voicing concern and frustration over a recent spate of church break-ins, with thieves targeting sacred institutions across the region.
The affected churches, spanning villages such as Kianjege, Kamoro, Karima, Seema, and Kiangwaci, have reported stolen audio equipment, specifically speakers and amplifiers.
Led by Paul Mutahi and Bernard Mwangi, the local community is stunned that no church has been spared, with even prominent denominations like the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) and Catholic churches falling victim.
The latest incidents include the Karima ACK and Karima Catholic churches, where perpetrators broke windows to gain entry and made off with valuable equipment.
Residents are puzzled about how these break-ins can occur without detection and are increasingly suspicious of possible insider involvement.
"How can churches be broken into without being noticed? There must be people within those places working with the criminals," said Mutahi, echoing the concerns of many in the community.
On his part, William Muturi has expressed alarm over the safety of churches, emphasising the troubling trend of thieves targeting places of worship.
Residents are calling for a thorough investigation to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
They are also urging authorities to increase police patrols, especially at night, to deter further incidents and restore peace and security in the area.
