Bribery claims rock KMPDC as KMPDU calls for independent probe and vetting

In a letter dated February 17, 2026, KMPDU said it was alarmed by an audio recording in which a member of the KMPDC is allegedly heard offering a Ksh.1 million bribe to a doctor involved in a medico-legal dispute.
KMPDU said it had learnt the recording is nearly two years old, and warned that the allegations, if true, would undermine the integrity of the Council- a regulator mandated to oversee licensing, discipline, accreditation of training institutions and standards of care.
“The mere suggestion that members of this body may be using these powers for personal gain is damaging to the regulatory framework and to the public’s confidence in it,” the union said.
KMPDU argued that the claims raise questions about the fairness of disciplinary procedures, particularly where doctors have expressed willingness to take responsibility for their actions but, the union alleges, are threatened with excessively high penalties.
The union called for the removal of the current KMPDC board within 14 days, and demanded independent and transparent investigations into anyone linked to the alleged misconduct.
It also proposed an interim governance framework to allow continued regulation as investigations proceed, and a comprehensive vetting and restructuring process to restore integrity at the Council.
KMPDU further warned it would withhold remittance of regulatory fees until the Council is restructured, saying doctors should not be expected to pay fees into what it termed a compromised system.
The union said its demands are anchored on constitutional principles of transparency, accountability and integrity in public office, and urged the Health CS to take action “in the public interest”.
The letter is signed by KMPDU Secretary General Dr Davji Atellah and National Chairperson Dr Abidan Mwachi, alongside officials Dr Kahura Mundia and Dr Miskellah Dennis
