Koech, who hails from Kericho County, produced a remarkable turnaround from his 21st-place finish last year, delivering a composed and powerful performance throughout the 42km race.
He credited his win to his mother's motivation and his decision to maintain a steady pace from the start.
“I was greatly encouraged by my mother’s phone call yesterday. I maintained my speed from the beginning,” said Koech.
Kiprotich Langat finished second in 2:13:23 after a strong run that saw him climb from 20th position early in the race.
“The race was not that bad despite the challenges, especially the excess water on the course. The altitude was manageable. I moved from position 20 to finish second,” said Langat, who placed 10th last year.
Hosea Kiplimo secured third place in 2:13:29.
“I maintained my pace without too much struggle. I’m grateful because that is what I trained for,” he said.
In the women’s race, Uganda’s Dorine Chesang claimed top honours in 2:30:26, ahead of Margaret Muruiki, who finished second in 2:30:45.
“This is my first time competing here. I trained in a hilly area back home in Uganda, so the course felt easier for me,” said Chesang.
Jerono Jackline completed the podium, finishing third in 2:31:51.
Winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will take home Ksh 3.5 million each, maintaining the race’s status as one of the highest-paying marathons on the continent.
