KWS recaptures two lionesses that escaped from Nairobi National Park

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has successfully tracked and guided back two lionesses that had earlier escaped from the Nairobi National Park, bringing to an end hours of concern among residents in parts of Kajiado County.

KWS said the felines, which had been sighted in the Sholinke trading area in Kajiado East Constituency, were traced using the EarthRanger system and safely ushered back into the park by patrol teams during the night.

“The two lionesses earlier sighted outside Nairobi National Park have been successfully tracked using the EarthRanger system and safely guided back into the park by KWS patrol teams during the night. The situation is fully under control, and the public may safely go on with their normal activities,” the agency announced on Thursday.

On Wednesday, KWS had confirmed that the cats were approximately 8.3 kilometres from the park, giving precise coordinates as 37 M 261961 UTM 9834651, and assured that teams were actively managing the situation.

The agency at the time reassured the public of safety, noting that it was monitoring the situation with rangers and veterinary teams already deployed to recapture and relocate the lionesses.
