Mwaipaya, also a youth mobilization leader, was reportedly abducted in Kenya on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The alleged abduction, according to Amnesty International – Kenya, occurred in the Kamulu area in Machakos County.
It was established that Mwaipaya, who serves as the national mobilization coordinator for the youth wing of Tanzania’s main opposition party – CHADEMA, was abducted while travelling in a taxi.
“We demand that the Kenyan authorities disclose his whereabouts, ensure his safety and protect him from any forced removal from Kenya,” Linda Mwananchi said in a statement on Monday.
The Linda Mwananchi group has termed the said abduction a shameful betrayal of democratic values and solidarity that Kenya owes to its neighbours.
“Kenya has provided sanctuary to defenders of democracy and human rights fleeing persecution in the region. Our country must never become a place where people escaping repression are tracked down, abducted and delivered back into the hands of those they fear,” the movement stated.
“We demand an independent investigation into his abduction, and accountability for everyone involved, regardless of their office or nationality,” Linda Mwananchi added.
According to the opposition outfit, there has been a series of abductions targeting opposition figures and human rights defenders from neighboring countries.
“In November 2024, Ugandan opposition leader Dr Kizza Besigye was abducted in Nairobi, and in January 2025, Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai was abducted by armed men in Nairobi,” Linda Mwananchi said.
