Residents in Utawala, in Nairobi's Embakasi area have decried a rise in insecurity.

According to a section of residents, cases of muggings and break-ins have been reported in recent months.

"The unknown gangs target people who are on foot. They plan the attack well in advance," a resident noted.

The area, which is only a stone's throw away from military camps, is complete with various estates.

Flats and stand-alone house can be spotted as one plies along the Eastern Bypass.

"The most affected are locals who frequent entertainment joints in Utawala," another added.

Citing a case where he was mugged and his phone stolen, the unnamed local added that he has since opted to stay indoors.

"I have been forced to change my schedule. It has come as a relief to my family though," he quips.

Matatus are also not spared as locals said some of them have lost their valuables on transit. With businesses operating in the area till late into the night, traders now fear that they could be targeted as well.

"I sell nyama choma at a local joint. I am glad that most of my customers are from the adjacent bases ranging from police to army officers," John Kamau said.

He however says that one can still be a target once they close their shops and head home.

"We urge the authorities to conduct patrols not only in the main estates but also focus on surrounding areas."

According to locals, the thugs keep changing tact and the areas of operation to avoid arrests.

"When they conduct a raid in one area, they shift base to another spot, kilometers apart."
