Riders frequently encounter road accidents, yet most lack formal insurance or reliable access to healthcare, often leaving families to absorb the cost of emergencies.
The boda boda sector, which supports millions of livelihoods and contributes billions to the economy, remains one of the most exposed to medical and financial shocks.
Operators and industry observers have long raised concerns over the heavy burden of injuries, noting that even a short hospital stay can keep a rider off the road for days, disrupting income in an industry where earnings are made daily.
The sector has historically been underserved by mainstream health and insurance systems.
HealthX, a Nairobi-based digital healthcare provider has introduced a package offering round-the-clock medical access and basic accident protection at a price point tailored to riders’ daily earnings.
HealthX Boda will allow riders to access qualified doctors anytime via mobile phone, while receiving personal accident cover and a hospicash benefit in case of hospitalization.
Speaking during the rollout, HealthX CEO Roy Bore said the initiative responds to a longstanding gap in the transport sector.
“Boda riders keep the country moving, yet they are the ones who fall through the cracks when it comes to healthcare,” he said.
“For just fifteen shillings a day, they can protect their health, secure their livelihoods, and access quality medical care on demand,” he added.
The platform will operate on the company’s existing digital ecosystem, which currently serves over a million users nationwide, and is being integrated into local ride-hailing applications to make onboarding seamless for riders already using mobile platforms to find work.
HealthX Chief Commercial Officer Peter Atinga described the plan as an effort to acknowledge the role the riders play in the economy.
“Boda boda riders deserve better, better healthcare, better protection, and better dignity. This is a statement that their lives and wellbeing matter,” he said.
