Lukenya University, in conjunction with its partners, officially launched the fourth edition of the Ten Million Trees Marathon on Tuesday at Riadha House, Nairobi.
The initiative, begun in 2023 as a one-million-tree
project, has since grown into one of the institution's most ambitious
community-led environmental campaigns.
Addressing the audience during the event, Lukenya
University acting Vice Chancellor Dr. Judith Wafula expressed optimism ahead of this
year’s edition, revealing that the initiative is focused on growing ten million
trees in the next decade.
"We are targeting to grow 10 million trees in a decade. So far, we have reached 1,011,060 trees.
"It is building into
the National Tree Growing
Restoration Campaign with a target to plant 15 billion trees." She noted.
The first edition of the annual race was held in
2023, initially targeting one million trees had a survival rate of 85% of the
trees.
The university currently runs 17 active tree
nurseries, with more expected to be established as the initiative expands to
new regions.
The marathon involves all ages, consisting of six
categories: 42 km, 21 km, 10 km local race, 5 km fun run, and two cycling
categories, Black Mamba 21 km and Pro-Mountain Bike 42 km. The marathon is set
for March 28, 2026, in Makueni County.
The vice chancellor affirmed their commitment
to plant one million trees by March 2026.
Dr. George Wesonga, the local organizing committee
chair, confirmed their targeted number of 1000 athletes and cyclists. He adds
that the committee has integrated technology to assist in monitoring the
marathon.
"Our target this year is 1000 athletes. We might have a small challenge due to the distance, but with proper organization, we will manage. We have also employed advanced technology in managing the race," said Dr. Wesonga.
The fourth edition prize money ranges from
Ksh. 500,000 for 42 km, Ksh. 250,000 for 21 km, and Ksh. 40,000 for both the 10 km local race and cycling categories.
During the event, Lukenya University also
celebrated and recognized outstanding contributions from Kenyan athletic
heroes, including former Berlin Marathon champion Patrick Makau, who continues
to inspire young athletes through mentorship and sports development programs.
The institution reaffirmed its commitment to
using sports as a platform for environmental action, calling on the public,
corporate partners, athletes, schools, and even the government to join the
movement.
With increasing momentum, the Ten Million
Trees Marathon aims not only to green the country but also to empower
communities and promote a culture of environmental stewardship across
generations.
