The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) on Saturday announced that a
luxury cruise ship carrying at least 2,500 passengers docked in Mombasa.
KPA, in a statement released on X platform, said the ship,
dubbed MSC Poesia, was from the Mediterranean Shipping Company.
Besides the 2,500 passengers, the cruise liner that docked at
the Port of Mombasa also had 1,000 crew members, 20 of whom are Kenyans.
“With a length overall of 294 metres, MSC Poesia is one of
the biggest cruise vessels to have docked at the Port, coming barely a month
since the port hosted another luxury liner, Norwegian Dawn,” KPA said.
“To be able to add value and support Cruise Tourism, KPA has
invested in the requisite infrastructure, including the state-of-the-art cruise
terminal to cement Kenya’s status as a hub not only in cargo operations but
also cruise tourism in Africa.”
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and Mombasaa Governor
Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir were on hand to welcome the tourists to the Coastal
town.
“We continue to work to make
Mombasa the destination of choice for global tourism by providing a clean and
welcoming environment that leaves guests wanting to return again and again,”
said Governor Nassir.
