Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has unveiled a new framework to guide responsible antibiotic use and curb antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a growing public health threat.

The Empiric Antibiotic Guidelines, launched on Wednesday, provide clinicians with a standardised approach to prescribing antibiotics, particularly in cases where treatment must begin before laboratory results are available.

Hospital Chief Executive Officer Fredrick Obwanda said the initiative aims to promote evidence-based medical practice and improve patient safety across Nairobi County.

“As a busy Level 5 referral hospital, we encounter a wide range of infections daily. These guidelines help clinicians make informed decisions early, ensuring effective treatment while minimising misuse of antibiotics,” said Obwanda.

The guidelines were developed through collaboration among doctors, pharmacists, microbiologists, nurses, and other specialists, with support from the Nairobi City County Government.

Obwanda noted that the framework aligns with the county’s broader goal of improving healthcare quality, safety, and accountability.

“Our focus is to move away from guesswork in prescribing and strengthen Nairobi’s role in infection prevention and clinical innovation,” he said.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital plans to support the rollout with continuous staff training, audit-feedback systems, and research on antibiotic use and resistance trends.

The hospital says the initiative sets a benchmark for evidence-driven care in public health facilities, reinforcing its commitment to safe, effective, and dignified healthcare delivery.
