The Court in Nanyuki has sentenced a suspect to 35 years over murder charges, after finding him guilty of killing a man following a disagreement at a bar in 2017.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), Justice A.K. Ndungu sentenced Moses Njagi Wachira for the murder of John Maina Gathogo following insurmountable evidence presented by lead counsel Lucas Tanui, Jackson Motende and Esther Kimani.

The court heard that on October 18, 2017, the deceased had been drinking at Gitinga Bar when a disagreement broke out after he accidentally spilled the accused’s beer.

According to evidence presented in court, Gathogo, who was intoxicated, knocked down a table and poured Njagi's drink, triggering a confrontation.

Although the bar owner intervened and managed to calm the situation temporarily, the accused later assaulted the deceased.

Moments later, the victim was found near the bar with severe burn injuries and was rushed to hospital. Before his death, the victim informed his brother that he was assaulted by Njagi following a confrontation.

The victim's postmortem report, presented in court, confirmed that the cause of death was multiple burn injuries.

After reviewing the evidence, Justice Ndungu ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt that Njagi had committed the crime.
