The flag football scene in Western Kenya lit up over the weekend as Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) hosted a two-day triangular tournament featuring Maseno University and Kaimosi University across both men’s and women’s categories.

The November 22–23 competition doubled as a regional qualifier, with the top teams now preparing for the 2026 National Championships set for March 26–29 in Nairobi.

KFAF plans to conduct its referees and coaches training program in January 2026 at Masinde Muliro, led by KFAF SG Akaka Shisoka

Maseno University dominated the men’s division, displaying pace, precision, and tactical discipline to top the standings with 34 points. Kaimosi University claimed second place with 13 points, narrowly edging hosts MMUST, who settled for third with 12.

The women’s category belonged to MMUST, who capitalized on home support and well-executed plays to seal the title with 18 points. Maseno finished second with 6 points, while Kaimosi completed the podium after a spirited effort.

Kenya Flag Football Federation (KFAF) President George Alwanga, speaking to Citizen Digital, lauded the teams for their impressive performances and the rapid growth of the sport.

“These teams have shown immense growth, discipline, and passion. What we witnessed here is a testament to how fast flag football is taking root in our universities. Western Kenya is ready to challenge the rest of the country at the Nationals,” Alwanga said.

He further commended the Western Conference organizers and participating teams for their commitment, noting, “The national championships promise to be an exceptional event, given the remarkable athleticism and talent on display. The selection process for the national team will undoubtedly be challenging for the technical staff.”

KFAF officials also held strategic discussions with the Kenya University Sports Federation (KUSF) on expanding the sport’s footprint, enhancing tournament structures, and improving coaching and refereeing standards. KUSF SG Joan Adalo reaffirmed the body’s support ahead of next year’s Nationals.

The tournament concluded with a vibrant awarding ceremony at the same venue on Sunday.
