Substitute Alfayo Oyugi stunned Gor Mahia U20 in extra time to help Mathare United U20 clinch the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) U20 Championships crown with a 1-0 win on Friday, August 26.

Gor’s Head Coach, Maurice Onyango, blamed his players for missing clear cut chances that ultimately came to bite them in the 91st minute when Oyugi scored coolly from a free-kick just on the edge of the penalty area.

“My strikers were blunt in front of the goal. I am, however, pleased with their overall play and it’s a positive thing for us to see such talent in our youth. We can only hope to develop them into better players,” Onyango said after the match.

Mathare’s Head Coach, Gabriel Njoroge, credited the organisation of the club’s youth structures for the winning performance from his boys.

“We have the Mathare talent academy that trains young talent from their tender age; from 12 to 17 years. From the training academy, the players have been able to bond well since they have played together for a longer time,” Njoroge said.
