A much hyped contest is on the horizon. Two amateur boxers, Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer, have given the nation a date in April, when they take to the ring to not only entertain but also win prize money.

The hype around the contest has even attracted the attention of President William Ruto, who has pledged Ksh.2 million for the fight, and rallied Kenyans to turn up in large numbers to cheer their favourite boxer.

Citizen Digital caught up with Mbavu Destroyer at his training base, where his main tools of trade are building blocks.

"I want to win this fight so that I can build my mum a decent house," Mbavu says.

This, he says, is his biggest motivation. He grew up in a moderately humble background, with his father as the sole breadwinner for the family, and his mother the glue that kept the family going.

He could not afford a proper education, but being the firstborn, he is doing all he can to give his family a better life.

"My mum is the biggest source of motivation for me. I'm going into this fight knowing that a win will help me give her a better home. She has been everything to us," Mbavu says.

Unlike his opponent Majembe, who has sought the services of a professional trainer, Mbavu is training with building blocks. Many see him as an underdog in this fight, but he disagrees.

"I will break his (Majembe) three ribs. He can't beat me," he avers.

He can't afford a professional trainer ahead of the contest, but he believes he is doing enough to be ready for the fight.

"I'm certain I'll win."

Mbavu says the hype around the contest is good for the sport, and thanks everyone who has chipped in to popularise the contest.

"This is an encouragement to the Kenyan youth. When people come together to support us, including the president, it means a lot for sport in this country," he concludes.
