Microsoft urges Kenya to adopt AI training in schools to boost digital readiness

According to experts at Microsoft, integrating AI studies early will accelerate the country’s adoption of emerging technologies and strengthen its position as a regional innovation hub.

Microsoft’s AI skills director, Winnie Karanu, says embedding AI in the curriculum requires strong policy support and capacity building to ensure young people gain practical, future-ready skills.

“I think there is an opportunity to think around how do we turn this into actual policy where we are able to capacitate teachers, ensure we embed AI into the curriculum but also ensure we are building the right level of capacity in our educational institutions," said Winnie Karanu.

"Right now a lot of training is being done by nonprofit organisations or other tech companies and I think the opportunity is to really leverage the infrastructure that we have in the education system to be able to skill but also improve that learning over time."
