The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the immediate temporary closure of the Migori River Bridge, effective Saturday, March 7, 2026, citing dangerous water levels that have rendered the crossing unsafe for motorists and the public.

In a statement signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, KeNHA attributed the closure to rapidly rising water levels in River Migori, a consequence of the heavy rains that have been battering the region in recent days.

The authority did not indicate a specific reopening date, saying the bridge will remain shut until further notice.

"The Migori River Bridge has been temporarily closed to traffic starting today, 7th March 2026, until further notice," the advisory read, urging all road users to take note and plan their journeys accordingly.

Motorists who regularly use the bridge as part of their route have been advised to seek an alternative crossing.

KeNHA recommended the Kiringi Bridge along the Migori–Kehancha Road as the designated diversion, and called on all road users to adhere to this guidance to avoid delays and ensure their safety.

The authority assured the public that it is actively monitoring the situation on the ground, noting that repair and restoration works will commence immediately once water levels recede to a level deemed safe enough for crews to operate.

The closure is expected to cause significant inconvenience to traders, commuters, and residents who rely on the bridge as a key connection point in the region.

KeNHA acknowledged the disruption, saying it regrets any inconvenience caused and appreciates the cooperation and patience of the public during this period.
