World Rugby has officially confirmed Kenya as the hosts of the opening leg of the HSBC SVNS 2, marking a historic milestone for the nation and the East African region.
Scheduled for 14th–15th February 2026, the Nairobi
tournament will usher in the second season of the restructured global sevens
circuit, bringing premier international rugby action to Kenyan soil for the
first time ever.
The selection positions Kenya as the inaugural stop on the
three-leg calendar, with Brazil and Uruguay set to host the subsequent rounds.
The announcement cements Kenya’s growing reputation as a
global rugby destination and places Nairobi firmly on the international sports
map.
The tournament will feature highly competitive action in
both the men’s and women’s divisions. In the men’s category, Kenya will compete
against USA, Uruguay, and Germany in what is expected to be a thrilling battle
for early momentum in the chase for promotion to the top tier.
The women’s lineup
will see the Kenya Lionesses take on Brazil, China, and Spain, promising
equally captivating matchups as the home team aims to capitalize on strong
local support.
Kenya’s successful bid is the culmination of a long journey
shaped by the country’s rich rugby history and proven hosting capacity.
For decades, Kenya has showcased its rugby passion through
the annual Safari Sevens, a tournament that has consistently drawn
international teams.
The nation has also previously hosted major World Rugby
events, including the U20 World Trophy in 2009 and again in 2023. Backed by the
Kenyan government, the Kenya Rugby Union submitted a formal bid in September
2025 to host one of the new HSBC SVNS Division 2 legs.
This Month, World Rugby officials conducted an extensive
infrastructure assessment across potential venues such as the Nyayo National
Stadium and the new Talanta Sports City Stadium, as well as accommodation
facilities.
The successful hosting of the 2025 Rugby Africa Women’s
Sevens at RFUEA Grounds further strengthened Kenya’s case.
Reacting to the confirmation, Kenya Rugby Union Chairperson
Harriet Okach expressed immense pride and optimism. In her statement, she said,
“The Kenya Rugby Union is honoured by the trust World Rugby has placed in us
with the announcement that Kenya will host the HSBC SVNS 2 on 14–15 February
2026. This milestone presents a significant opportunity for Kenya Rugby and the
nation at large. Hosting this event will strengthen our global presence, expand
commercial potential, and inspire the next generation of players.”
The event, officially branded as the HSBC Nairobi Sevens,
represents a major step forward for Kenya’s rugby ambitions. It offers both the
men’s Shujaa and the women’s Lionesses a unique chance to compete for promotion
in front of an electrified home crowd.
Beyond sport, the
tournament is expected to boost tourism, enhance commercial activity, and
solidify Nairobi’s status as a premier global sports destination.
