Concerns have been raised by the Ministry of Health over an emerging trend of people engaging in prolonged tree-hugging, with reports indicating that some participants have suffered health complications serious enough to require hospitalisation.

Addressing residents in Ngiriambu, Gichugu Constituency, Kirinyaga County, on Thursday, Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said individuals should undergo proper medical check-ups before taking part in physically demanding activities to rule out underlying health conditions that could pose a risk to their lives.

Muthoni noted that activities perceived as harmless can become dangerous without adequate preparation, adding that those intending to engage in strenuous exercises should ensure they are well prepared and properly rehearsed beforehand.

The Principal Secretary also cautioned health facilities against exploiting patients enrolled in the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme, stressing that beneficiaries are entitled to value for money when accessing healthcare services.

She singled out some private and faith-based hospitals accused of overcharging services under the SHA card in a bid to maximise profits at the expense of sick patients.

Muthoni directed hospitals to clearly display the services they offer, outlining those that are free, those covered by SHA, and those that require out-of-pocket payments, to enable patients to make informed choices and avoid unnecessary costs.
