The initiative, officially launched on Tuesday by Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr Ouma Oluga, aims to equip healthcare professionals with advanced skills in lung disease diagnosis and management.
The three-day specialist training, developed in collaboration with the University of Nagasaki and the Ministry of Health, introduces modern bronchoscopy technology to Kenyan clinicians.
The programme is designed to improve early detection and enable precise treatment of respiratory illnesses, including Tuberculosis (TB), Pneumonia, Asthma, and Lung Cancer, which continue to affect thousands of Kenyans each year.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Oluga highlighted the importance of strengthening diagnostic capacity to enhance patient outcomes.
“This initiative prioritises hands-on training and mentorship for doctors, nurses, and technologists,” he said. “It aligns with our commitment to developing a skilled and well-distributed health workforce under Kenya’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.”
Kenyatta National Hospital, hosting the programme, is positioning itself as a regional centre of excellence in pulmonary care.
Officials say the initiative will not only expand specialist training but also support local research in respiratory health, further advancing Kenya’s capacity to tackle lung diseases.
The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including Dr Richard Lesiyampe, Acting CEO of KNH; H.E. Hiroshi Matsuura, Ambassador of Japan; and Prof. Keitaro Matsumoto from Nagasaki University.
Dr Oluga expressed gratitude to international partners for their support, urging trainees to leverage the opportunity to enhance patient care and contribute to a healthier, more resilient Kenya.
