Mombasa United secured a convincing 2–0 win over Kibera BlackStars in a National Super League clash played at Serani Sports Ground on Sunday.
After a cautious opening 20 minutes from both sides, the hosts broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Hakimu Msami rose to the occasion, expertly connecting Steve Nyagol’s dangerous free kick from the right flank to give Mombasa United the lead.
Kibera BlackStars responded with increased attacking intent in search of an equaliser, but their efforts were punished once again.
New signing Samuel Etta doubled United’s advantage in the first half, calmly tapping in Fidel Omondi’s cross following a swift and heated counterattack.
Mombasa United carried their 2–0 advantage into the halftime break, holding firm despite sustained pressure from Kibera BlackStars’ attacking unit.
The visitors came out strongly in the second half, creating several chances within the opening 20 minutes. Phoelix Mboya, Maraga Japeth, and Clement Masakidi all came close to reducing the deficit, but their attempts failed to find the back of the net.
Late drama unfolded as Mombasa United were awarded a penalty in the 89th minute after a handball inside the box. However, their top scorer Nehemiah Onchiri missed the chance to extend the lead.
Moments later, Onchiri was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for delaying a quick restart, leaving United to finish the match with ten men.
Speaking after the match, Kibera BlackStars head coach Iddi Badi admitted his side fell short but praised his team’s effort.
“It was a hard match for us. Mombasa United has been good in the league this season, but we gave it our all. They scored from two set pieces, and we must learn to defend better. All in all, we have to go back to the drawing board and prepare for the next match,” said Badi.
Mombasa United head coach Gilbert Selebwa described the victory as an emotional one, dedicating it to his late assistant coach, Rix Kanuli, who passed away earlier in the week.
“We all agreed that this win would be dedicated to our late coach Kanuli. I’m happy the players kept their promise. We are all happy, and we know the coach is smiling with us,” said Selebwa.
