Residents of Mulot Sunset township in Bomet East are raising concern over the increasing number of commercial sex workers in the village town.

Some of the women; wives and mothers, who spoke to Wananchi Reporting, said that their men are the target customers.

“This is a new thing in this small town, and as women we are concerned that these highly ‘painted’ city girls will lure our men into their bosoms,” a woman trader in the town told Wananchi Reporting.

According to some of the residents, the illicit trade is being carried out in residential houses – and with the aid of unscrupulous landlords.

“Our young children can see these things because some of these residential houses house families. As parents we fear for our young sons and daughters,” said Joel Korir, a resident of Mulot Sunset.

Patrons who love to pass time in some of the pubs in the area have also complained about rising cases of drink spiking and theft.

Many are pointing an accusing finger at the commercial sex workers.

“Saturdays are market days in Mulot and that’s when it gets rampant because many people come to the town to buy and sell. It’s usually a busy day for the commercial sex workers,” said Joseph Koskei, a resident of Mulot.

Residents told Wananchi Reporting that some of the commercial sex workers are visitors who have come from other towns just to ‘peddle flesh’ – with many targeting farmers and traders.

Mulot recently hit the national headlines as the home of mobile money fraudsters.

The residents now want the county government to regulate activities around commercial sex work in the area – and where possible ban the activity in residential areas to protect children and families.
