Muslims across the country are marking Eid ul-Adha today with special prayers in various towns, as families gather for the holiday also known as the Festival of Sacrifice.

In Mombasa, worshippers are attending Eid prayers at different locations, including Masjid Ummu Kulthum, where Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho joined the congregation. Mombasa County Speaker Aharub Khatri and other leaders were also at the venue.

In Kwale County, Muslims continued streaming into the prayer grounds at the Kongo Mosque in Diani for the Eid ul-Adha service.

In Taita Taveta, worshippers gathered at Moi grounds in Voi for the Eid prayers.

Eid ul-Adha is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar and commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God.

The holiday coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Makkah and is marked by prayers, charity and family gatherings, with many households also performing the sacrificial slaughter of an animal and sharing the meat with relatives and the less fortunate.
