Nairobi United
head coach Nicolas Muyoti has backed his team to finish inside the top five
this season, saying there is no pressure on the side to challenge for the
Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title just yet.
The former City
Stars and Kakamega Homeboyz tactician noted that the Naibois will only shift
their focus to a title push when the moment is right.
“For now, we are
not focusing on the title because we do not want to put unnecessary pressure on
the boys. There will come a time when we look at ourselves, assess our
position, and decide whether we can talk about the title. That time is not now,”
said Muyoti.
United currently
sit 10th on the KPL table with 12 points—seven behind leaders Gor Mahia—but
have three matches in hand owing to their CAF Confederation Cup commitments.
“We are doing
our very best because, at the moment, we are carrying the weight of both the
league and the CAF Confederation Cup. We must balance the two, especially with
the travelling involved for away fixtures, while also managing player rest and
the mental shift between CAF duties and the KPL,” Muyoti explained.
“We are
committed to performing well in the league and representing the country
honourably on the continental stage. That means pushing for better results from
the boys.”
With league
champions Kenya Police already eliminated from the CAF Champions League
preliminary round, Nairobi United remain the only Kenyan team competing on the
international stage this season.
This marks their debut in both the top flight and the CAF Confederation Cup, following their National Super League title and FKF Cup triumphs last season.
