Kenya Power has announced a widespread power outage affecting several parts of the country following a disruption to electricity supply on Wednesday night.

In an update issued at 9:05 p.m., the utility firm said the blackout had affected customers in Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya and parts of the Central Rift.

However, the company said electricity supply remained stable in parts of the North Rift and Western regions.

"Our technical teams are working to restore supply to the affected areas as quickly as possible," Kenya Power said in a statement.

"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience as restoration efforts continue."

The outage was widely felt across Nairobi, with videos and photos seen by Citizen Digital showing large sections of the Central Business District plunged into darkness, while a handful of buildings remained lit using backup generators.

Commuters at the Nairobi Railway Station and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) terminus also reported power interruptions, with videos shared online confirming the outage.

Kenya Power has not disclosed the cause of the outage but says engineers are working to restore electricity supply to the affected regions as quickly as possible.
