The bursary cheques were handed over to Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at Charter Hall, City Hall, by the County Executive Committee Member for Talents, Skills Development and Care, Brian Mulama. He highlighted the importance of the programme in helping vulnerable children stay in school.
Each of the city’s 85 wards received KSh 3.5 million, part of the KSh 595 million total bursary allocation for the 2025/2026 financial year.
Separately, the County has set aside KSh 262.9 million under the County Executive Scholarship Programme to support academically talented but financially disadvantaged students pursuing secondary and tertiary education.
Governor Sakaja previously announced that 43,978 bursary cheques had been issued citywide, with 2,640 beneficiaries across five wards transitioned to Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to improve efficiency, accountability, and speed of disbursement.
The bursary framework aims to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent deserving learners from accessing education.
“A city that educates its children secures its future; a city that neglects them mortgages it. When you pass a budget, see not just the numbers but the people. These are real stories of hope restored, of parents breathing easier, and of children who can now dream beyond their circumstances. This is not charity; it is our duty to the people of Nairobi,” Sakaja stated.
MCAs welcomed the timely release of funds, noting that the support will help families manage school fees amid rising living costs.
Uthiru/Ruthimitu Ward MCA Peter Maina said the programme provides opportunities for students from vulnerable backgrounds to pursue education without interruption.
These bursary and scholarship initiatives form a key part of the county’s strategy to improve school retention, reduce dropout rates, and support academic achievement across Nairobi.
