Nairobi County launches free rabies vaccination drive targeting over 10,000 pets

The countywide initiative, conducted in partnership with the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA), runs from January 31 to February 15, 2026. The campaign begins in Kasarani Sub-County before extending to other parts of Nairobi, with vaccinations offered free of charge at designated centres.

Maureen Njeri, County Executive Committee Member for Green Nairobi, said the campaign reflects the county’s focus on preventive health and responsible pet ownership. “Rabies is entirely preventable, yet it continues to pose a threat. Vaccinating pets is a key step in protecting public health,” Njeri said.

The programme combines public education with mass vaccination across multiple sub-counties, including Kasarani, Embakasi, Dagoretti, Makadara, and Kamukunji. Vaccination points will be set up in markets, schools, community grounds, and chief’s camps to ensure wide access.

The County Veterinary Department has reminded residents that annual rabies vaccination is a legal requirement and urged pet owners to comply. Residents are also encouraged to report suspected rabies cases promptly to county veterinary offices, licensed veterinarians, the County Customer Service hotline, or KSPCA for swift response.

“Controlling rabies requires community participation,” Njeri said. “We urge Nairobians to bring their pets for vaccination to help reduce the risk of disease.”
