Nairobi traders want security beefed up ahead of Gachagua's march to IG's office

On Monday, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua announced that he will rally his supporters to take to the streets following the police inaction on Witima church attack.
The business community on Thursday expressed fears that such protests in the past have left them counting untold losses as they question the plans by the state to protect their premises.
They say many traders are currently operating under tough economic conditions, and the disruption during the protest will force them to close their outlets.
The traders, ranging from bodaboda operators, hawkers, PSV operators, and shop attendants, warned that there would be glaring risks if inadequate security plans weren't in place.
On Monday, Gachagua faulted IG Kanja, for failing to arrest police officers who ambushed him at ACK Witima Church on Sunday, January 25, 2026.
Gachagua, who had gone to Kanja's office to follow up with the police on the issue, alleged that the Inspector General went into hiding to avoid meeting with him and his fellow United Opposition leaders.
He told the police chief that he would be back on Friday, February 20, for another meeting.
However, Gachagua, the leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), promised to marshal 100,000 Kenyans on Friday to march to IG Kanja's office, saying he would bring the nation's capital to a standstill.
“Tumemwambia siku ya ijumaa, saa tatu, tutakuja kwako na watu elfu mia moja kutoka jijini Nairobi,” said Gachagua.
