A couple from Rongai in Nakuru County is counting huge losses
after robbers ambushed them and stole their money moments after withdrawing
from a bank.
Joy Chebii and her husband Benson Langat had just withdrawn
Ksh.699,000 from a bank in Nakuru’s CBD to facilitate the purchase of
construction materials for their rental houses in Rongai.
Chebii says that after withdrawing, they went to a nearby
eatery and took their lunch before hiking a matatu towards home where they
alighted at Sobea junction and then took a boda boda.
“We had just gone some distance when a Landcruiser Prado
overtook us and blocked us before gun-toting men came out and ordered us to
surrender the money or they shoot us, they took my handbag and whisked away my
husband,” she narrated.
Langat said he was ordered not to identify anybody in the
vehicle as the thieves took all the money and left him only with Ksh.2,000 that
were in a separate pocket before he was dumped on the roadside while covered
with a sack.
The couple reported the matter to the Menengai police station,
and Rongai OCPD Wilberforce Sicharani has since advised members of the public
to avoid carrying large sums of money in bulk or using bags.
