Hundreds of residents from Keyian Ward in
Transmara West, Narok County, stormed Olereko Mixed Secondary to express their displeasure
following a consistently dismal performance in KCSE exams.
The community is demanding answers from the
Ministry of Education after the school recorded a mean grade of 1.5, with the
top student scoring a D plain in the 2023 KCSE results.
The Olereko community on Friday suspended
their normal activities to deliberate on what they say has been ailing the
school for more than 10 years.
Armed with placards, the locals unanimously
vowed to take action and demand answers to ascertain the reasons behind the
mass failure of students at Olereko Mixed Secondary School.
They braved the muddy soil for the sole
purpose of bringing change to the posterity of their children.
“We're unhappy today, we have gotten poor
results for a decade and what the community is simply asking is a change from
the ministry, we have given an ultimatum of two weeks,” Darius Kiserema, a
resident, said.
“Tumejumuika kwa maandamano....wanafunzi
walikuwa 23, mtoto wa kwanza alikuwa na D plain...hiyo ni mean score of 1.5,”
another resident, Benson Mpasa, added.
The angry residents also called for an
overhaul of the school management in a bid to realise good results.
“This is wanting na wazazi hawafurahii hii
jambo, shule ni board na wamenyamaza kabisa...hakuna siku ata wanafunzi
wanapewa mawaidha,” Thomas Thunye noted.
Joshua Ledama added: “Kwa ujenzi tuko number
one lakini kwa matokeo sisi ndio tumevuta mkia Kenya, hata technical course
hakuna ata mwanafunzi atapata...pioneers pia walifail hadi wa leo wamefail ,
huyu principal amekuwa tangu 2013, how can we have a mean score of 1.5?”
The residents staged a day-long vigil within
the school compound awaiting word from education officials on the way forward.
“Lazima niwashukuru sababu mmekuwa
peaceful...ombi langu kama chief, our DCC na wizara ya elimu wamenituma
niwaambie watachukua hatua,” Senior Chief Joseph Ole Nangoris said.
They retreated to their respective homes with
the hope that the Ministry of Education would act on their demands to rekindle
hope in the community.
