NEMA orders sand transporters to obtain permits

In a notice dated February 18, 2025, NEMA instructed those involved in sand harvesting to apply for licensing through its official portal. Director-General Mamo Boru Mamo cited the Environmental Management and Coordination (Sand Harvesting) Regulations of 2024, emphasizing their role in environmental conservation.

“The main objective of the regulations is to ensure the sustainable utilization of sand as a resource while protecting the environment,” the statement read in part.
