Kenya Volleyball Federation men’s national league defending champions General Service Unit (GSU) were treated to a ‘sorry loss’ from newbies Kenya Airport Police Unit (KAPU) as the 2025/2026 season served off on Thursday at the Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The closely contested tie saw GSU spanked 3-2 sets of 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 24-26, 15- 5 by the newly promoted side.

GSU drew the first blood, winning 25-21 before KAPU clapped back to win the second and third sets 25-22 and 25-21 respectively.

However, GSU reclaimed their mojo in the fourth set to win 26-24 in what was a nervy-ending set, forcing a decider clash.

In the fifth set, KAPU roared as they flawlessly crushed a tired-looking GSU 15-5 to take home the two important points.

KAPU head coach Luke Makuto was in awe of his boys’ masterclass, highlighting his impressive defence as key to their win.

“I want to thank my boys for their impressive shift in today’s game. We have shown what we are capable of doing and we just want to play well and win games,” noted Makuto.

The Junior Wafalme Stars coach added, “GSU is a good team and they have quality but we showed grit today. Our defence worked as per my expectations because we always train to defend well.”

KAPU will now be aiming to continue their stellar start of the season when they take on National Youth Service (NYS) on Friday.

GSU will be looking to redeem themselves on Sunday when they take on Trailblazers Volleyball club.

In other matches staged at the same venue, Nairobi Prisons stunned NYS 3-2 while AP Kenya thumped Eldowas with the same score line.
