The National Land Commission (NLC) has intensified data collection on historical land injustices and disputes across counties as part of its mandate to promote equitable access to land and ensure justice for affected communities.

According to the Commission, a total of 1,864 land disputes have been reported by communities nationwide. Out of these, 1,066 cases have so far been resolved, marking significant progress in addressing long-standing land conflicts.

The Commission is currently conducting visits to various counties to engage directly with residents, local leaders, and administrators in order to better understand land-related challenges at the grassroots level and accelerate solutions.

During its engagement in Kajiado County, the Commission highlighted the success of the Alternative Justice System (AJS) in resolving land disputes. The system provides a community-based approach that allows parties to settle conflicts amicably without undergoing lengthy and costly court processes.

Tiyah Galgalo, Commissioner at the NLC, urged residents to embrace alternative systems of dispute resolution to promote faster, more affordable, and more accessible justice. She noted that court backlogs have delayed the resolution of many land cases, and AJS offers a practical solution by encouraging dialogue, mediation, and community participation.

Commissioner Galgalo further called on public institutions, including schools and government offices, to formalize ownership of the land they occupy. She urged them to register the land and begin the process of acquiring proper documentation to safeguard public property and prevent future ownership disputes.

Kajiado County Commissioner Michael Yator emphasized that the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the Nyumba Kumi Initiative are playing a key role in steering efforts to resolve land issues.

He stated that through close collaboration with the National Land Commission, these local administrative structures are helping to identify disputes early, support mediation efforts, and enhance coordination between the government and communities.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to working with county leaders, community elders, and national government structures to ensure sustainable solutions to land disputes.

By promoting alternative justice mechanisms and strengthening documentation processes, the NLC aims to reduce court backlogs, prevent emerging conflicts, and restore public confidence in land governance systems.
