The National Liberal Party (NLP) is intensifying its political presence in the Mount Kenya region, with a vibrant weekend rally in Tharaka signalling the party’s growing momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The caravan, led by National Organising Secretary Jemima Katheeku, drew residents as it made stopovers across Tharaka Nithi, Embu, and Meru counties.

Analysts say NLP’s rising activity aligns with the broader ambitions of party leader Dr. Augustus Kyalo Muli, who is positioning the party to play a more influential role in Eastern Kenya’s shifting political landscape.

Muli’s proactive outreach in Mount Kenya has drawn comparisons with past regional strategies, with observers noting that early engagement may give NLP strategic leverage heading into the 2027 presidential race, potentially independent of long-standing coalition formations.

The Tharaka event adds to a string of recent engagements as NLP seeks to consolidate ground in Mount Kenya. The push follows Muli’s earlier endorsement by the Agikuyu Council of Elders, who granted him blessings to engage the wider GEMA community, signalling a notable opening for the party in the region.

Beyond Mount Kenya, NLP continues to nurture a strong support base in the Ukambani region with thousands of registered members.

The party’s widening outlook was also evident in the recently concluded Ugunja and Ugenya by-elections, where NLP fielded candidates despite finishing modestly.
