Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that the government has not allocated any budget to compensate the victims whose properties were either looted or destroyed during the Wednesday, June 25, protests.

In a press briefing, he explained that Parliament should enact a law that defines compensation for such victims and also impose stiffer penalties on protest organisers.

He highlighted the need for protests to be regulated to hold the organisers to account if property is either destroyed or looted.

"Unfortunately, Parliament has not allocated a budget for compensating those whose properties were looted in such situations and we don't have any allocation as a government to do so," he stated.

"If we were to provide budget that would compensate people all the time whenever properties are looted, then the best law is that protest organisers should bear the greatest responsibility."

"That is why we insist on a law defining where the organisers will hold their demos, what time and where. Mombasa is an example of how public protests should occur."

He, however, cited that the leaders would personally contribute as a form of support to those who suffered immense losses.

Further, the CS claimed that 'goons' caused mayhem until midnight and in the process robbed civilians who were heading home.

"The destruction went all the way to midnight. Goons were brought from Murang'a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and were left in town, others on Thika Road and on their way home, they went causing havoc and mayhem. The police were overwhelmed," he noted.

"It has not been easy when such a number of goons, criminals, thugs and robbers are concentrated in one area, collected by politicians."

According to Murkomen, property worth billions was destroyed during yesterday's protests, citing that the goons targeted supermarkets, electronic shops and restaurants.
