Mombasa United head coach Gilbert Selebwa is confident his
side can begin 2026 on a winning note when they travel to face Soy United in a
demanding National Super League (NSL) fixture this weekend.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Selebwa said he was encouraged
by his squad’s physical and mental condition following the end-of-year break,
noting that the players returned sharper than expected.
“I was afraid that after the end-of-year break the players
would return unfit, but I’m happy they are all back strong and steady, ready to
continue working hard. I’m also delighted that we are now a full house after
the return of all injured players,” said Selebwa.
The tactician has challenged his team to improve their away
form, admitting that consistency on the road will be key if Mombasa United are
to sustain their promotion push.
“As we approach the Sunday encounter against Soy United, we
know we don’t have a good away record. But we must start winning those crucial
points if we want to lift the NSL title. Soy United are new in the National
Super League and will be highly motivated, but we are going all out to win this
match,” he added.
Selebwa also confirmed that the club expects eight new
signings to formally link up with the squad after this weekend’s KPL and NSL
fixtures. Among those already training is experienced defender Rogers Aloro,
formerly of Tusker, Bandari and Shabana FC.
“We have had a youthful and energetic squad, but at this
level — and considering what we want to achieve — we need experienced players
who have won in the KPL and NSL to instill a winning mentality. We’ve spoken to
eight players, and soon you’ll see them with us,” Selebwa noted.
Mombasa United currently sit fourth on the NSL table with 25 points from 14 matches, and a positive result away to Soy United could significantly boost their promotion ambitions as the 2026 campaign gathers momentum.
