Queens head coach Crispine Odindo is eying Safaricom Chapa Dimba national title
after clinching the Nyanza region girls’ title after edging Victoria Sports
Academy (VSA) on Sunday at Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
That was the second regional title for Plateau Queens who overcame their opponents VSA 4-3 in post-match penalties after a 1-1 stalemate in regulation time.
“We thank God for the win and I can say it was a result of my players utilizing the tactics I gave them in training. In 2018 we emerged the tournament champions and we want to replicate the same this time round.
We are not breaking the camp but instead we will continue with our training as we aim to clinch the national title. I thank my players for giving it all and also the fans for coming at large and supporting their respective teams.” Said coach Odindo in an interview with Citizen Digital.
Elsewhere, Obunga FC were crowned the new regional champions after beating Awendo Academy from Migori 2-1 and speaking after the match, the head coach Amos Ochieng promised fireworks in the national finals.
“For the first time we have reached this level and we really thank God for enabling us. Tactically I can say that the defence let us down a bit but that something we shall rectify going to the nationals. I can’t complain on the officiating since the referee was very fair. I also thank the sponsors Safaricom for the good job they are doing. Setting up such a tournament gives player time to be easy and not to engage in bad behaviors which will spoil their lives.” Ochieng said.
By winning the title, Obunga FC and Plateau Queens have each pocketed Sh. 250,000 and will represent the Nyanza region in the National finals slated for early next year.
The runners-up Awendo Academy and Victoria Sports Academy, both pocketed KES. 150,000 each.
This year, Safaricom Chapa Dimba Nyanza region featured a total of 530 teams, including 412 boys’ teams and 118 girls’ teams that participated in the tournament from the ward level.
The tournament which targets footballers aged between 16 and 20 years aims to provide a structured platform for scouts and coaches to tap into new talent and build feeder systems for the Kenyan football leagues across the country while also training a total of 250 coaches.
The tournament now moves to Eastern region later in October.
