The match formed part of Kenya’s preparations for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Ivory Coast took the lead in the 21st minute through Rebecca Ello, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to score what proved to be the decisive goal.
Despite the early setback, the Harambee Starlets created several promising chances throughout the match but failed to convert them, with poor finishing ultimately proving costly.
Reacting after the game, Odemba admitted the team must improve in key areas, particularly in attack.
“We really need to work with the girls mentally and psychologically. We also need to sharpen our attack. We are creating chances but we are not getting goals,” said Odemba. She noted that the friendly nonetheless offered valuable lessons, helping the technical bench assess player combinations and the squad’s current level.
“The friendlies have helped us see the team as it is and assess the combination of different players. We still have time to work on the team,” she said.Odemba also stressed that the team is determined to improve on its previous appearance at the continental tournament.
“The last time Kenya qualified for WAFCON, we lost all our matches. We are looking forward to doing better than we did last time. Ivory Coast have given us a feeling of what to expect ahead.”The defeat came during the February–March FIFA international window, with Kenya — currently ranked 133rd in the world — using the matches to build cohesion ahead of a planned residential training camp in France.
While the result underlined the attacking ruthlessness required at continental level, especially against strong opposition like Ivory Coast, Odemba remained optimistic about the team’s progress.
