Officer holding laptops during demos took them to Central Police Station - NPS clarifies

The National Police Service (NPS) has moved to clarify a viral video circulating on social media showing a uniformed police officer holding laptops in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) during Tuesday’s protests.

NPS, in a statement on Wednesday, allayed concerns that the officer may have stolen the laptops, reportedly looted from shops that were broken into by goons during the demonstrations calling for justice following the murder of Albert Ojwang in police custody.

Police confirmed that the officer was part of the security team dispatched to contain the protesters, and that the said were taken to the Central police Station after the suspect who stole them was arrested.

“NPS wishes to clarify that following recent protests in Nairobi, several shops were broken into and various items were stolen. Police officers arrested one suspect and recovered four laptops, which are now in safe custody as exhibits at the Central Police Station, Nairobi,” the service Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said in the statement.

The police are now urging anyone whose premises were broken into and had laptops stolen to visit the station to identify the recovered items.

“Meanwhile, an investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those involved in the criminal activities during the protests,” added Nyaga.
