A 30-year-old police officer died in an apparent act of self-harm early Wednesday morning inside his residential quarters in Juja Sub-County, Kiambu County.

The deceased, identified as Police Constable Dennis Kibet Cheruiyot, was found in his residence within the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) residential lines.

A police report said that senior police commanders, including the PEU Deputy Commandant, the Juja Sub-County Police Commander, and Crime Scene Investigators from Juja, recovered a service firearm at the scene after visiting the residence.

Preliminary findings indicate that a single shot was fired.

Detectives also discovered a three-page note on a table near the officer, which reportedly detailed personal struggles and final wishes.

The contents of the note have not been made public.

The crime scene was processed and documented by forensic personnel.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has since been transferred to the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) mortuary for preservation pending a post-mortem examination.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Juja has also launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the officer's death.
