This bout is a crucial warm-up for Okwiri as he prepares for a World Boxing Association (WBA) showdown against Ugandan Shafik Lukyamuzi, on September 7 in Nairobi.
Okwiri is targeting wins in both bouts, including the warm up as a way of building confidence.
“At first I was supposed to fight an opponent from Malawi but he that later changed because he has a half star, while the Zimbabwean has a full star. This will certainly be a good challenge. I left Kenya last night (Wednesday) at 9:00pm and now I’m getting ready to go to the gym later in the evening to start my final preparations,” Okwiri said.
Okwiri, known for his disciplined approach and relentless work ethic has been in top form and his camp believes that the fight in Mauritius will provide the perfect platform to fine-tune his skills.
The bout is expected to be a test of strategy with his team focusing on perfecting tactics that will be crucial when he faces Lukyamuzi.
"This fight is just a warm up in preparation for the fierce fight in Nairobi. I’m only asking Kenyans to pray for me to come out unscathed because this is a very unpredictable game," Okwiri added.
