Scores of residents scrambled for petrol after a fuel tanker overturned at Sagana along the Makutano–Sagana–Karatina highway in Kirinyaga County.

The tanker was travelling towards Karatina from Nairobi when the accident took place.

Following the accident, residents rushed to the scene and started looting the commodity before the police intervened.

Tension mounted as the residents looted the fuel while curious onlookers watched from a distance.

Police had to shoot in the air to disperse residents who were scooping petrol that had spilt on the ground.

The afternoon accident caused a major traffic jam that lasted for two hours.
