A police officer was on Sunday evening swept away by raging floods in Nairobi's Country Bus station while helping to rescue four people trapped by the flash floods.

The officer, David Chesire, from Kamukunji Police Station, was in the company of his colleagues when they came across three women and a child trapped in one of the stalls where a concrete slap had caved in.

The 10 pm incident saw the officers quickly swing into action, successfully rescuing the four.

But the missing officer went back to close the stalls when the remaining concrete slap caved in, and the floods swept him away.

Chesire was swept away together with his rifle, an AK47.

The incident was reported at the Kamukunji Police Station and a search and rescue operation is still going on.

The unfortunate incidents sum up a chaotic evening that caught city dwellers unawares when heavy downpours led to flash floods in some parts of the city.

Images and videos shared online showed the Expressway Way flooded, with motorists driving through flood waters and workers busy trying to unclog the Expressway.

Other flooded parts include South C and Ruai as neighbourhoods remained semi-submerged for the better part of the night.

The pounding rains were also accompanied by isolated storms as trees were felled in parts of the city including Dennis Pritt Road in Kilimani.

Data from the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) shows that the rains will stretch to Wednesday as most parts of the country will experience heavy rains.
