Police probe mysterious death of KQ pilot after night-out in Nairobi West Prison

Police have launched a murder investigation into the death of Kenya Airways pilot Kelvin Theuri Wachira after he succumbed to severe head injuries following an incident in Nairobi.

What began as a night of merry-making with friends at the Nairobi West Prison Mess in Lang'ata ended in tragedy, with the 33-year-old pilot dying at Mbagathi Hospital after being rushed there by a man who identified himself as a Good Samaritan. 

According to a police incident report filed at Lang'ata Police Station, Wachira was last seen on July 19, 2026, socialising with friends at the prison mess when an altercation reportedly broke out.

Hours later, he was found unconscious near the entrance to the facility along Lang'ata Road.

Hospital records indicate that he was admitted to Mbagathi Hospital as an "unknown African male."

Medical staff noted that he was bleeding from the mouth and had sustained injuries consistent with severe head trauma, prompting emergency treatment.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Homicide Unit, led by Martin Nyuguto, has formally requested the hospital's medical records as part of the ongoing investigation.

Detectives are also analysing CCTV footage from Mbagathi Hospital, which captured the final moments before Wachira was admitted.

The footage shows him arriving at the hospital in a black saloon car, registration number KAP 199J, driven by a man who introduced himself only as a 'Good Samaritan'.

Hospital officials told investigators that the man claimed to be a security officer attached to Lang'ata Women's Prison and said he had found Wachira unconscious outside Nairobi West Prison.

CCTV footage reportedly shows the man standing beside the vehicle holding a jacket before briefly speaking to a nurse and a security guard.

He later left the casualty department at about 7 p.m. and drove away three minutes later, leaving Wachira admitted at the hospital.

According to hospital records, doctors attempted to transfer the pilot to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised intensive care, but no ICU bed was available.

His condition deteriorated and, despite efforts by medical personnel to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at 8:10 p.m. on July 20, 2026.

A post-mortem examination later established that Wachira died from blunt force trauma to the head.

As part of the investigation, detectives have documented both the Nairobi West Prison Mess, where he was last seen, and the scene along Lang'ata Road where he was found unconscious.

His white Mercedes-Benz, which was parked outside the prison mess on the night of the incident, has been impounded at the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters for forensic examination.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the person or persons responsible for the fatal injuries that led to the pilot's death.
