The announcement, made Monday by the President's Executive Office, is based on recommendations from the Power of Mercy Advisory Committee (POMAC) and is grounded in the constitutional authority granted by Article 133.
Among those pardoned, 31 people serving life sentences have been granted conditional release.
In addition, a foreign national from an East African Community (EAC) member state who is serving a life sentence has been granted conditional release and repatriation to their homeland.
Another 25 people will be released after having their remaining sentences commuted.
President Ruto has declared a General Amnesty as part of a larger effort to address prison overcrowding and reduce the burden of minor offenses on the criminal justice system.
This amnesty applies to all petty offenders serving sentences of six months or less, as well as those with six months or less remaining on longer sentences.
