The demonstration follows Governor Cecily Mbarire's appearance, alongside county officials, before the County Public Accounts Committee (CPAC), chaired by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’, where she admitted that the funds were used to facilitate a boda boda summit.
The riders, however, strongly denied the claim, insisting that they were neither involved in the alleged summit nor beneficiaries of the said funds. They argued that any meetings or activities involving boda boda operators were funded through their own contributions and not public money.
An agitated group of riders accused the Governor of attempting to shift blame by linking them to the disputed funds. They warned against using boda boda operators as scapegoats in cases of alleged misappropriation of public resources.
“We raised our own money. We cannot be dragged into issues we know nothing about,” said one of the protesters. “The Governor should take responsibility and not involve boda boda riders in matters of public finance.”
The operators further criticised Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi and the Embu County Assembly, accusing them of failing to effectively execute their oversight role in safeguarding public funds.
In a bold move, the riders issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Mbarire, demanding that she publicly clears the boda boda operators of any wrongdoing.
They also want the Governor to disclose details of the alleged boda boda SACCO, including its location and operations, which they claim is unknown to most riders in Embu.
The protesters warned that failure to address their concerns within the given timeline would prompt further action.
As of the time of publication, there was no immediate response from the Embu County Government regarding the riders’ demands.
