Registrar of Political Parties releases key timelines ahead of 2027 polls

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has released a communique outlining key processes and timelines leading to the August 10, 2027 General Election.

The guidelines, drawn from the Political Parties Act and the Elections Act, are meant to ensure compliance and transparency in party nominations, mergers, and independent candidacies.

According to the ORPP, political parties must submit names and specimen signatures of authorized officials to both the ORPP and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) by mid-October 2026.

Parties are also required to forward their nomination rules between September 26 and October 16, 2026, with certification by the Registrar due by October 30. Membership lists will be submitted and certified in March 2027, ahead of nominations scheduled later that year.

For independent candidates, the timelines stipulate that resignations from political parties must be completed by May 8, 2027. Candidates intending to run independently are required to submit and certify their symbols with ORPP between March and May 2027, alongside requests for confirmation that they are not members of any political party.

The communique also highlights provisions for mergers and coalitions. Political parties entering into merger agreements must submit them to ORPP within 21 days of signing, while coalition agreements must be filed by April and May 2027 depending on whether they are for coalition political parties or pre-election coalitions.

Registrar of Political Parties J. C. Lorionokou emphasized that these timelines are binding and critical for orderly preparation of the polls.

The ORPP further said it would work alongside IEBC to safeguard the integrity of Kenya’s electoral process.
