Kenyan missionary and ordained minister Rev. Jane Wanja Kamau has received an honorary doctorate from the United Nations International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC), saying she accepted the recognition while representing Burundi, the country she describes as her “land of calling”.

“I am here to receive my honorary Doctorate with UNIPGC, representing Burundi, my land of calling, where my family and I have been serving faithfully for the past 14 years through Burundi Community Outreach Missions-BCOM,” she said.

Kamau is the founder of Burundi Community Outreach Missions (BCOM), a faith-driven organisation she established in 2014 and which was legally registered in March 2020.

She says the mission was inspired by her experience serving in Burundi, where she encountered widespread poverty, illiteracy and the marginalisation of the Batwa, Burundi’s indigenous community.

According to her biography, Kamau and her family moved to Burundi in April 2012 as volunteer missionaries.

She says the experience shaped her commitment to empowering underserved communities and supporting peacebuilding, education and economic development.

BCOM says its programmes focus on strengthening communities and fostering peace across Burundi.

Over the past five years, the organisation says it has run initiatives in health, education, discipleship, farming, business development and community outreach, with peace and unity as the central goal.

Kamau is married to Bernard Mungai and they have four children. She holds a Higher Diploma in Business Management, Part I of the CPA certification, and a Bachelor’s degree in the Art of Theology.

She is also a certified trainer in Abundant Leadership and serves in ministry roles as a Reverend and Apostle.

Before her missionary work, Kamau managed flower export companies for seven years, experience she says contributed to her organisational leadership.

Her biography lists other recognitions from international bodies, including World Civility Ambassador (2022) and Youth Civility Icon (2023), as well as peace and governance-related honours.
