As Kenya joins the world in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, concerns have been raised over a rising number of autism cases in the country.

Dr Norman Kiogora of the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) revealed that the institute has launched research to identify the factors behind this increase.

"There is an increase in autism worldwide. We are conducting research to find out what is causing this rise in large numbers. Just yesterday, our team was abroad, and colleagues there also expressed concern about the rise of autism in their countries," Dr. Kiogara said.

He added that the findings of the study will be shared with stakeholders and the public once the research is complete. According to Dr. Kiogara, while disabilities such as hearing impairment, physical, visual, and intellectual challenges have long been recognised, autism remains largely “invisible” and less understood.

Rosemery Kihoto, Deputy Country Director at the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), highlighted the ongoing challenges in supporting persons living with disabilities.

"Some children require routine therapy several times a week or month, often travelling long distances to access these services," she explained.

Rhoda Gakii, a representative of the Kenya Society for Deaf Children, emphasised the importance of early assessment.

"There is still a need to sensitise the public on the importance of bringing children for early assessment," she said.

The remarks were made at KISE during this year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities, where hundreds of individuals received free assessments.
